Speed of delivery is one of the most powerful conversion drivers in UK eCommerce. For sellers who need to offer same-day or next-day delivery, choosing the right courier — and integrating that choice with your fulfilment operation — is critical. Not every courier can genuinely deliver on speed promises, and the costs vary significantly.
Same-day delivery requires the parcel to be collected and delivered within the same calendar day — typically meaning the order is placed before a morning cut-off (often 10–11am) and delivered by early evening. Very few standard courier networks offer this at scale; same-day is usually limited to metropolitan areas and delivered by local courier or van services.
Next-day delivery (also called overnight or express) means collection by end of day and delivery before a specified time the following day. Most major UK couriers offer a next-day service, but delivery windows vary — "before 9am", "before 12pm", and "by end of day" carry very different cost profiles.
DPD's next-day service is widely regarded as the most reliable in the UK for eCommerce. Their 1-hour delivery window system reduces missed delivery rates significantly, and their network covers the whole of the UK mainland. DPD Next Day typically guarantees delivery before 5:30pm, with earlier options available at higher cost.
Royal Mail's Special Delivery Guaranteed service offers next-day delivery before 9am or 1pm with full tracking and built-in compensation for loss or damage. It's more expensive than standard next-day courier options, but the compensation levels make it appropriate for high-value items. Available from any post office or via click-and-drop for volume senders.
Budget couriers like Evri offer a next-day option at lower price points, but their delivery reliability is lower than premium carriers. For businesses where delivery speed is a selling point — or where late delivery results in a customer complaint — the saving per parcel rarely justifies the increased service failures.
The most reliable way to offer consistent next-day delivery is to partner with a 3PL that has a cut-off late enough in the day to capture your orders, and that dispatches on a premium courier service. PackPro dispatches orders placed before 2pm for next-day delivery via DPD and Royal Mail, depending on the service required. Talk to us about how your order profile maps to our dispatch cut-offs.
